  1. The masks don't. They reduce spread via touching your face in public and contaminated micro droplets, but just breathing out will allow some viruses through. The n95 masks are barely more effective than surgical ones in preventing spread because viruses are that small. It's one of the reasons it took so long to get those requirements to wear masks. The efficacy is not well supported, but it does reduce spread some amount.
