This runs the danger of having the same issues that GMO has. Because there's been insufficient public involvement in the problem, it gets polarized. GMO is a complicated subject where there's a massive difference between technology that's essentially taking genes from one individual of a species and putting it into another individual of the species. Versus transgenic technology where genes from a species that cannot reproduce with the target species. This is where crazy stuff like jellyfish genes can be put into plants. Both are potentially risky, but transgenics are particularly problematic as the technology has evolved at a rate that exceeds our ability to really understand all the ramifications. In the former case, the risk is mostly limited to things we can do right now in terms of mono-cultures and overrunning the local environment. Plus, in the case of transgenics, just because it wasn't previously possible for the specific gene to migrate to the organism in question, now it's possible for it to migrate into any organism that can reproduce with it. AI has the same potential, we could very easily wind up with a situation where you're only viable option is to opt out entirely or accept the consequences of the AI. And with Tesla's deathmobiles going around murdering cyclists and motorcyclists, you may not even have a choice.
