It wasn't as much of a problem when people could get by on a single income and the cost of medical care wasn't so high. It was still a problem, but a lot of this is the result of starting in a bad place and failing to keep up with the increase in needs.

That's assuming that we even know that we're disabled and not just having extremely bad luck with employment. Which is a fairly common thing for hidden disabilities. Especially ADHD and autism where there hasn't been a very good track record of identifying people for a proper diagnosis or diagnosing the patients that are identified as being possibly so.

@sandrahedlund4214 You see the same basic thing with unemployment claims, there's inadequate oversight of the hearings that are done to ensure that the adjudicators are actually remaining neutral.
