This whole bit about being handed a list of names is particularly bad for folks with ADHD or other conditions that impact planning. I gave up finding a provider for treatment for my ADHD and got my prescriptions from my GP because I could not find anybody that was taking patients and could provide treatment to an adult with ADHD. When I talked with my doctor, he was pretty clear about the fact that there just aren't any doctors that do it and that it's common to have a GP prescribing for that. I didn't really need more than that, but it's horrible that a doctor without specialized training is the status quo for treatment. Even if you do manage to get a psychiatrist to treat ADHD in adults, virtually none of them are qualified to provide care as it's only been in the recent past that the doctors started to recognize that ADHD doesn't go away just because you're an adult.
