  1.  @Silver77cyn  That right there is the issue. There are literally hundreds of tribes throughout the US and they all have some number of members that may or may not agree. I personally think the update is a good one in that it does distance itself from the racist aspects of the animation, but still maintains a sense that these could be from the animated film. It was going to happen eventually, or it was going to feel dated in a way that the rest of the ride doesn't. And that's assuming that people don't start to get even more offended by it in the future. Best to just address it now before a future CEO uses that as an excuse to just demolish the entire ride for one that doesn't have such a perpetually long line for the amount of use it gets.

  2.  @hafirenggayuda  That's probably the strongest point against this change possible. I can't recall any explanation given as to how they have children in their village when nobody seems to age, kids remain kids and adults seem to never grow old enough to die.

  3. Keep in mind that Iger retired once, he's probably not going to be at Disney for too much longer regardless. All the magineers and folks need to do is drag their feet as much as they can and perhaps some of this won't actually happened. Plus, a bunch of this stuff is extremely early days in terms of planning and may not actually happen.

  4.  @RokuroCarisu  The thing is that much of this isn't even popular on the left either. It's popular with a small number of very loud activists. Splash Mountain in particular was rather egregious as most people haven't even seen the movie as it hasn't been screened or available for sale in decades.

  5. In all fairness, that probably wasn't his fault. Just about ever specialty channel did something along those lines. Does MTV even do music videos these days? And hasn't The History Channel more or less turned into "The Ancient Aliens Channel" or some equally ridiculous equivalent?

  6. Sometimes that's a good thing. Considering that the various American Indian reservations are more or less 3rd world in terms of development level, I don't think that fighting to keep the ones based on the outdated stereotypes is a fight worth having. Last time I watched the animated film, that entire sequence was incredibly uncomfortable to watch, given that it was animated while the Indian Wars were still somewhat active.

  7.  @purplespeckledappleeater8738  TBH, I think Princess Tiger Lily is probably less problematic than some of the other characters they had in that movie, especially during the musical number. I don't personally have a particular dog in this fight, but if the images are any indication, it's a lateral move at worst and more likely a step in the right direction. At least that picture appears more consistent with the original film while removing the more offensive parts.

  8. That could certainly still happen. Also keep in mind that they do have one of the few profitable streaming services. Presumably that's because they have a massive catalog of TV and movies that people still want to see that they either don't have to pay royalties on at all, or only have to pay to the people involved in the production and not a 3rd party media company as well.

  9. That's a good idea, but probably not necessary. The stuff that needs to be preserved is mostly stuff that was never made available on home media. That being said, I'm probably going to sign up for their streaming service as it is somewhat profitable and it's one of the only streaming services that is actually profitable in it's current state.

  10. We'll see. They have one of the largest catalogs of titles that people do want to see of any of the studios, so I certainly wouldn't count them out. Also keep in mind that they are right now one of the only streaming services that's in the black. Granted, it's barely profitable, but we'll have to see what happens going forward. They do also have a bunch of properties that they could potentially sell off without doing too much damage to their catalog. Suggesting that they're going out of business though is a bit of a stretch. Especially if they have already adjusted for the lack of value of the TV stations, and I think everybody knew that was coming, TV is just not what it was. The streaming service is a bit of a bright spot, even if it is just barely profitable as they do have a pretty massive catalog of things that they already own and can potentially create new content with. But, we'll see, but I wouldn't really expect them to outright go out of business or be sold off as they are one of the largest studios in the world and the DoJ seems to be remembering that they're supposed to be enforcing antitrust regulations, which makes this kind of a weird situation where they can't really be bought, but there aren't really many other options for selling significant portions of their catalog either.

  12. The really angering thing in all this is that they'll have a successful show and arbitrarily cancel it at 3 seasons, regardless of how well it's doing with the viewers. They'll then replace it with something that's substantively the same, but different. Which then has to find a new audience, and it's gotten out of hand.

  14. We'll see if it works though. Universal hasn't been standing still and unlike in the past where there weren't that many options, the competition is better than ever. Unlike at Disney, the express lines that Universal has actually work. You have a guarantee about how many you get, and you can get in the line whenever you like to use it. It is a lot more expensive, but it's still quite affordable compared with the cost of the rest of the experience.

  16. I was just at their Hollywood studios last week and it's busy. The real question is likely going to be whether they keep producing their own films and TV in the future, or if they mostly go the way of renting their facilities to 3rd parties and exist as a streaming service. Those parts of the studio are profitable, it's some of the TV and movies that they're making that can be a bit of an issue. But, isn't that like all the major studios right now? At least WB can lean on their back catalog if they get smart people in to right the ship.

  17. What's the point? They already made all of the books into movies and any new movies based on the franchise are going to have to contend with JK Rowling's bigotry. It could be done, but I don't see it generating the sort of money it would have 20 years ago.

  18. That's why they'll be with us for some time. They're the largest of the studios in terms of back catalog and you're outright not going to be able to sell it off the way that they could have sold Ford off. The physical studio is profitable, the streaming service is profitable. The linear TV division is a massive albatross and there certainly have been some flops in the movie and games divisions. They certainly could fail anyways, but I'm just not sure who could even buy their back catalog other than the government as they're that large.

  20. It is though, it's not at all what Walt created. Opening day for Disney World you could buy tickets for $3.50 for an adult and $1 for a child. Which is roughly $24 and $6.75 respectively. Granted, the sophistication and scale has increased since then, would you really suggest that the experience is that much better now? Granted, you don't have to pay for individual tickets these days, but I'm not sure that really accounts for a roughly 300% increase in price.

  22. I wish they'd just ditch the cinematic universe approach and just focus on releasing good movies. I'd love to see a new Guyver movie, the ones they did in the '90s were actually pretty decent for being early '90s super hero movies.

  29. We'll see, that certainly could happen. However, WB does own one of the only profitable streaming services, a massive back catalog of materials to work with and they've been renting access to their facilities for decades. As long as they can generate enough cashflow to cover their obligations, they'll be fine. Worst case would be cutting back on the original content while they figure it out. Personally, I've love to see them do something with their older titles like the Guyver which feels due for a reboot as the effects available in the early '90s really didn't do it justice.

  31. I was really disappointed with Disneyland when I went recently. The lightning lanes are a joke, and much of the stuff they've got hasn't been adequately maintained. Compare that with Universal Studios Hollywood where, most of the changes since I last visited either park, have been positive. I was a bit disappointed that they ditched the animatronic King Kong, but I had relatively little to complain about. Their express lines worked relatively well, with short waits on the attractions that we wanted, and we didn't even bother using it on the studio tour as we went when the line was super short. (I will say that the best thing about lightning lanes is that if the ride goes down at any part of your reservation, they cancel it, give you a pass for any ride that takes the lightning lane and let you immediately book your next use)

  32. You clearly have no idea what catalogs they own. Thanks in large part to Ted Turner, they have the largest back catalog of any of the companies. It's unlikely that anybody growing up with access to American media can't list at least a few titles that are owned by WB these days.

  33. They have a massive back catalog of stuff that people actually want to watch. I visited the studio recently and it kind of blew my mind all the various properties that the studio owns the rights to. Arguably WB has a bigger chunk of the TV and movies that I grew up with than Disney. We'll have to see how things go, but they could well still turn things around, that is if they go back to focusing on making stuff people want, or at least avoiding spending a lot of money on stuff that the fans hate. If they just stopped producing more than just a few TV shows and movies and really focused on nailing the stories and characters, that would probably suffice. The studios get leased out all the time to 3rd parties and the streaming service is profitable. They've already marked down the TV channels, so they might as well cut them loose entirely.

  34. I think that's a bit overly dramatic for the change they've made. After what they did to Splash Mountain over less, no attraction is safe if enough activists decide that they're no offended enough to demand changes. This is a pretty benign change to the ride that will reduce any pressure to remove the rest of it as the rest of it isn't particularly problematic for a story set in London at the time it was set.

  36. Having gone to both Disney Land and Universal Studios Hollywood recently, it's astonishing how much ground Disney has lost over the last 30 years. (The last time I visited either park) Universal has a express line system that actually works in a reliable fashion, you're guaranteed a use on every single attraction, (more if you pay to upgrade to unlimited) and most of the stuff in the park is either new, or at least looks it. In terms of theming, the areas that they have themed don't really look that much worse than what you'd see at a Disney park. That being said, due to the use of 3d screens in the rides, it's worth bringing motion sickness medications if you're prone to it.

The only activist I've known used the term Indian and quite honestly, the folks that should be the most offended would be white folks. And, even there Indian is kind of dumb as Columbus thought he had discovered the other way to Japan, not India, the Europeans were well aware that Japan was more or less the furthest east you could go and be on some sort of a known map. That being said, this is a group that often times has much better things to worry about than a simple slip like that.

  40.  @TheOneGreat  There are some amazing games out there that would be completely impossible previously. But, there's also a ton of shovelware and general crap as well. There always was, but I think the lack of real demos and shareware is a big part of the problem. You have to pay to see if you're going to like it without any ability to really get your money back.

  42. They should, the stereotypes in Peter pan are far worse than the ones that Got SotS cancelled and Splash Mountain destroyed. That being said, it looks like the update does a pretty decent job of being a bit more respectful while still having the same sort of feel. I'm sort of surprised that that whole scene hasn't already been axed from the animated movie.

  44. This isn't surprising, they oversaturated the Star Wars market on top of making Star Wars TV shows that at best appeal to a relatively narrow viewer base. I personally lost interest in watching any of it because there were too many and I clearly wasn't the target audience. The fact that so many of the movies seem to be redos of previous movies isn't helping.

  45. Yes, but OTOH, that's what gave us Mystic Manor in HK DL, and that one is also a lot of fun. It's not as iconic, but in some ways it's a more enjoyable ride.

While the young folks do have more interest in inclusion that previous generations did, that does not excuse having media that is devoid of any sort of value. It just means that there should be compelling stories and games tat have a broader base of inspiration. They still need to be fun and entertaining.

  48. The savings on PC games is even bigger. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that we hit the peak of what better graphics can really do decades ago and the publishers didn't really notice.

  50. I supposed, although even at $9.99 a month at a minimum, Max is profitable. That being said, they are well-equipped to have that free streaming wit ads as they have a massive catalog of stuff that they basically just owe residuals on for further use.
