This is more or less a one off. They were given a temporary break in the minimum wage. After this, they'll just get the same increases that every other minimum wage worker gets. If these businesses are so poorly run that this puts them out of business, they deserve it.

@URnickel_MY2cents The typical target inflation from the Federal Reserve is about 2%, this particular increase is a one off that will bring these employees back in line with the minimum wage that everybody else is getting.

@cassady7169 Yes, the minimum wage won't appreciably increase the housing stock or prevent landlords from engaging in illegal collusion.

@skeezix8156 The reality there is that it's kind of pay some now or a lot later. The solar stuff is kind of expensive to put in, but once it's in the maintenance costs are a bit lower and realistically, we can't continue with the current types of power generation forever. Personally, I would rather see some more nuclear in the mix, but given how badly Hanford has been handled, I'm not holding my breath.

No, but I would expect that people will somewhat reduce their tips to partially offset this. They'll still be making minimum wage without the tips, but it should somewhat reduce the pressure to put up with abusive customers. Personally, I'd rather that tips be outlawed completely if they're not actual gratuities for exceptional service or extra favors.

They said the same time when the minimum wage was set at $15, I doubt that any of the properly run restaurants are really going to have that much trouble. It's only a 16% increase and they'll just increase their prices to compensate. Yes, wages are one of the three biggest costs for a restaurant, but this is a one off increase to bring them into parity with other businesses.

That's why the minimum wage exists. To reduce the pressure to race to the bottom in terms of wages. Even at the minimum wages we're looking at for next year, that's really not enough even when compared with welfare benefits.

@cassady7169 Workers only have the negotiating power to do that if they're in a union. Otherwise, the employer generally has the upper hand in terms of pay negotiations.

The minimum wage is supposed to apply to everybody, there was a temporary partial exemption because of the amount of increase there was all of a sudden, but the plan was always for them to pay the regular minimum wage. And, they wouldn't have gotten that break at all if the city hadn't decided to put the city minimum wage above the state minimum wage. At the state level, tips do not count in the calculation of minimum wage earnings. The reason why those remain problems is that the city is stuck subsiziding a bunch of lazy layabouts in other parts of the state. If the taxes were kept locally, we could provide much of that with the taxes people are paying here.

If this is the thing that is putting them out of business, they deserve it. This is an approximately 16% difference between them and other businesses. They received a temporary break on it due to the significant increases in the minimum wage. Just increase the price of the food to cover it, or find ways of being less wasteful. They already benefit by being allowed to outsource some of the compensation of the employees to customers, something that many other businesses can't get away with and they're whining about having to pay minimum wage.

@rasputinspickledpeepee1976 I used to work in a grocery store and there are so many products that you can get to make cooking a lot easier while still being significantly more cost effective than eating out. One of my favorites is to buy a frozen package of noodles and veggies, get some tofu, beef or other protein and a bit of stir fry sauce. The entire dinner is done in a matter of minutes for significantly less than what a restaurant can afford to sell me dinner for. There's also hacks like getting a frozen pizza and adding some goat cheese to it.

@jhowardsupporter WA hasn't had an income tax in the decades since the first one put into place was ruled to violate the state constitution. Which is a shame because I'd much rather pay a portion of my earnings to the state out of my paycheck and get to deduct some of that from my federal taxes than the current bit where it's incredibly hard to deduct and I have to mentally keep track of how much I'm really going to have to pay when shopping.
