@Katfancy40 Why? He painted the truck and from what I can tell, everybody that painted trucks had that plaque. Removing something like that over the feels can be more of a pain than it's worth.

Probably not, the terms of these deals usually just cover whatever crimes are included at that time, there's no guarantee that if more crimes come to light that the deal will remain.

It's not that unusual for serial killers to strike a deal in exchange for revealing the bodies of whatever victims might not have been located. At the end of the day, capital punishment doesn't actually work and the only reason he was ever caught was that DNA technology improved to the point where they could make use of samples that had been left at the scene of the crimes. Add to that the fact that various friends and family would wind up having to testify in court and deal with the dredged up memories of their loved ones and it's not a super popular move to go for capital punishment when the jury may or may not decide that it's a better option than life without possibility of parole.

Won't happen now, that was when WA still had the death penalty. And that was probably true at the time, the deal just covered whatever crimes were covered by the deal, not any that came to light later on or were committed later on.

@McTaco Capital punishment was so sporadic and hard to predict that it never factored into anybody's decision to murder somebody or not. Even in states where it is a much more common penalty, it's still a rare occurrence compared with the number of murders. For example from 1979 to 2023 Florida only executed 100 people, or thereabouts. Meaning that only a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a percent of murderers were executed. If I went to Florida, the reason I wouldn't murder people would have nothing to do with the death penalty, it would have far more to do with the fact that I'm not the sort that goes around murdering people or at very least worried about going to prison for life. As life imprisonment is much more likely.

@dougsimmon7460 Prison is cheaper than execution. The amount of money it takes to prosecute a capital case and see it through all the appeals that inevitably show up is a lot more than just putting them behind bars for life. In the past, there were practical reasons to use it, but most of those issues no longer remain in developed countries. We have plenty of resources for putting the sorts like this behind bars for the rest of their lives without risk of them escaping. Neither of those two things were the case when capital punishment was popular.

@jamesshepherd8565 Or, we acknowledge that capital punishment doesn't actually do anything to deter further crime, doesn't ensure that the right person is punished and does nothing at all to help those that were impacted move on. All while costing a lot of money and resulting in innocent people being murdered by the state.

Yes, something like 49, and I don't think they run concurrently, so he'd be out of prison in something like 7 or 8 centuries.

Why would he pardon him? What precisely would there to be gained in doing so other than the fact that he's a Democrat and you've got poor rhetorical skills.

He can say he did it all he liked, but if there isn't any evidence, they probably won't accept it. He's not getting out of prison and there is no death penalty in WA, so as long as none of those unknown murders are in some place like Idaho that does have capital punishment, there really isn't anything other than attention for him to claim ones he didn't do. That being said, he's done so many that he may well not know how many he isn't yet convicted of murdering.
