Please don't repeat the lie that the people running corporations have a fiduciary responsibility to increase shareholder value. That's not the case and it doesn't even make sense. Making moves to protect against downturns in the economy isn't going to increase share price, but it's vitally important to any business that wants to survive the next financial crisis. Training and treating employees well also doesn't directly affect the bottom line in the short terms, but does over the long term. The company I work for loses a ton of money because they cheap out on hours. Fewer hours to do the work, means less work gets done and more mistakes go unnoticed. But, they use a formula that doesn't factor in the amount of work being done and nobody with any power seems to care. If it were an actual fiduciary duty, you'd see employees being provided with enough time and resources to eliminate costly mistakes.
