  1. They're not supposed to be, they're just supposed to rule on whether or not things are constitutional and how laws are actually interpreted in the judicial system. That's it. The reason why it seems like more than that is that both major parties have been punting issues that they should have been addressing to the courts rather than just legislating. The GOP has been particularly bad about that where they aren't even trying to push good policy, everything is about putting monsters on the court that are going to ignore the constitution on things like corporate power and abortion.

  2. That's a temporary fix. The long term fix is to make it a temporary position where they can't get re-appointed after their term expires. The pool of judges be restricted to a group handpicked by a non-partisan committee and subjected to the same ethics rules that all the other judges are expected to adhere to. No more refusing to recuse themselves when matters coming before the bench are too close to home.

  3. Is it perhaps time now, finally, that we admit that SCOTUS has no legitimacy? For decades, they've been thumbing their noses at the constitution, appointing George W. Bush to the Presidency despite lacking the votes to win the elctoral college, legalizing bribery, making corporations people for everything except explicit voting amongst numerous other things. The fact of the matter is that they don't have legitimacy, and it's a matter of time before people figure it out and just don't follow the rulings that they hand down. The latest bit where the GOP wouldn't even allow for hearings from qualified judges should have been the last straw and resulted in further court rulings being just ignored.
