That's a stupid question. The reason why is that the 2nd amendment was intended to apply to state run militias like the national guard and policing organizations. If they meant for it to be an individual right, they could have used the singular form. It's especially clear because at the time, people wasn't the plural for person like it is now, it was a collective. If you read through the amendments, it's pretty clear that they are using plural and singular on purpose. Gun ownership is a collective right to deal with the lack of a standing army and the lack of fully staffed professional law enforcement at the time. It was also necessary as a check on the federal government for the states to be able to get together and oppose the federal government if need be. None of this is particularly complicated, the folks that are reading this to be an individual right are in the wrong, and there's a reason why it took so long for the interpretation to be changed.

And what you folks ignore is that the 2nd amendment isn't talking about those weapons. It's talking about things like mortars, cannons, missiles and various other arms, the amendment does not say at any point that a person has the right to a firearm. It says that the people collectively have the right to keep and bear arms. That is a massive difference and anybody claiming that the 2nd amendment grants an individual right to firearms is ignorant because that's not at all what the amendment says. If you read the rest of the bill of rights, they use the singular form where it's intended to be an individual right and plural where it's intended to be a collective right. The 2nd amendment as written as would have made sense at the time was intended to guarantee that the national guard would have the necessary weapons to fight back in cases of invasion or insurrection, not so that idiots with no training and questionable mental health would be able to mow down dozens of people with a weapon that the people writing that amendment couldn't have even imagined.

@godssara6758 Unregulated militia, or do you you regularly train and receive orders? The militia to which that refers is the national guard. They're regulated, trained and equipped. The 2nd amendment does not refer to firearms, it refers to arms because it's not talking about individuals' rights, it's talking about the sort of weaponry needed for national defense. So, it's just blatant made up BS to indicate that it's just firearms and extends to ones so powerful that the people writing it likely wouldn't have been able to imagine. Cannons, missiles, machine guns, chemical and biological weapons, nukes, mortars, mines and drones are all arms, and none of them are included in the 2nd amendment as currently imagined, and more than one of those isn't even legal under international law.
