It's because it was so shallow. That being said, even with it being that shallow, it's barely newsworthy. That being said, sometimes smaller quakes like this turn out to be foreshocks rather than the main earthquake and I can't help but notice that the 17th is coming up. Both the North Ridge and Loma Prieta earth quakes happened on the 17th of a month.

@borisjankovici662 Having a stay at home order in place, isn't just about getting people to stay home, it's a way of coercing businesses into allowing employees to stay home and doing other things like freezing evictions while this works out. Any of these states that aren't issuing stay at home orders with specific rules are asking for trouble. God clearly does not care if people get covid-19, so WTF are people behaving as if that's the case?

The problem is getting it enforced. Around here, the city attorney refused to prosecute theft if it was under $1k. And in part because the crimes weren't going to be prosecuted, the cops stopped showing up. At which point, there's not a lot that stores can do to protect themselves against it. The store owners have limited rights to stop the theft.

Connor G I once spent an entire month on jury duty. He screwed up by not just oversleeping, but by failing to inform the court that he had overslept.

It's partially a matter of depth. This one looks to have been relatively shallow, which is why you see any sort of meaningful movement of furniture in those videos. As somebody in Florida, I think the Mississippi River is probably the closest location to you that is known to be seismically active.

@split_ce Yep 4.4 is pretty tiny. One that size has to be like right on the surface for it to do any meaningful damage. I don't really understand why they even bother to report anything under about 5 unless there's actual damage or injuries.

@jujubhee The regular flu infected far more people, we have effective vaccines and treatments for it. Also, the likelihood of severe complications from the flu is much lower than with this and individuals that recover from the flu, usually are perfectly healthy afterwards. People like you need to shut the hell up before you get anybody else killed.

Jerry Ogburn You clearly don't understand the system. The jurors are there primarily to weigh the evidence and to decide whether or not the prosecutor/plaintiff has made its case. They are given all the necessary law they need to render a verdict. If they think there's more they need, they can and do send notes to the judge with requests for clarifications about their instructions. Also, do you have a better method? Jury duty has issues in terms of fairness, but there aren't any real options that are any better.

@freshmen6255 And when we have 100% effective means of keeping those morons from infecting the rest of us, they can have their personal freedom on the issue. I had an extremely mild case of what was likely covid-19 when it first arrived in the US. And, it was no joke, the fact that self-entitled people like you will risk other people's lives because of this arrogance is beyond me. I just hope that you're idiocy doesn't get anybody killed.

@jujubhee Right now, and it could stay that way indefinitely, if not for the extreme arrogance of the people there to think that it can't or won't hit there. This virus is highly contagious and the only reason that it hasn't already hit WY, is that hardly anybody wants to go there. The virus is more or less starting with the places that people want to go and following the people to where they don't go. WY, happens to be a place where few people go, hence why there have been no deaths reported. That does not mean that there are no cases, thanks to a lack of testing, there are more cases in the country than we know about.

@ArizonaSquatch TBH, at a certain point there's not much point in being afraid. Just make sure you've got a water source and food to cover you until FEMA can get setup.

@@Crazy-Clown-In-Town It won't, but it can be greatly reduced, this wasn't a major problem 10 or 20 years ago. These days, I see the same folks coming in day in and day out stealing stuff. Most of them will go to the same place and steal the same stuff. But, without a law enforcement response, there's not much that the stores can do about it.

He was in contempt of court for failing to call the court and hoping it would just go away. He wasn't sent to jail for oversleeping. That being said, I think that 10 days was rather harsh. A day or perhaps a fine of some sort would have been appropriate. Contempt of court is one of the few tools available to judges to ensure that people stick to the rules of the road in court.

@krislvzep Thanks. The reality here is that we haven't done the necessary testing to know what the numbers are. Those figures are likely optimistic, but it doesn't take long for this to spread. And idiotic statements like the one you corrected are a large part of why. Here in WA we got virtually no warning about this coming. We were the first place for it to hit the US and the only reason why we haven't already had our medical system swamped, is that the mayor of Seattle closed the city early on, followed by the governor issuing more and more restrictions on what we do in public. Right now, it's just essential workers and businesses. Fortunately, it is working and it's likely that sometime between now and July, that things will start going back to the way they were. But, only if other states get their stuff together. We'll largely be rid of the virus by then, but if states aren't doing their part to contain their outbreaks, there's no reason to assume that it can't or won't come back and the constitution prevents us from closing the borders.

4.4 magnitude is like nothing, presumably this one was relatively shallow if there's any meaningful shaking going on. I've only personally been through one earth quake it was a 5.3 and I mostly just remember watching the water in the fish tank slosh back and forth. I didn't even bother trying to get under anything because it just wasn't any point.

How many alternates did you have? When I was on Jury duty for a month, there were only a few alternates and we could easily have run out if people had started to just not show up. The length of the jail time seems excessive to me, but they likely wouldn't have held him in contempt of court had he called in and let them know that he overslept. Failing to inform them when he knew is really what the contempt was over in this case, not that he overslept as people keep claiming. I'm sure this judge has multiple people every year that don't show up due to oversleeping and other things that are only partially in their control and this is the one that's making the news.

Yep, and the difference between a mature looking 14 year old isn't necessarily that much from a immature looking 17 year old. Depending on where exactly you are in the world, sleeping with one of them may be perfectly legal and the other not.

It wasn't even that big compared with the one that they're expecting. It was a significant quake, don't get me wrong, but compared with the big one it's not so big. Here in WA, we're still waiting on our big one and it's been over 20 years since our last significant quake. And even that one is a tiny fraction of the amount of energy that seismologists think is trapped in the faults here.

He didn't get 10 days for missing jury duty. He got 10 days because he didn't call the court to inform them what had happened. It's hard to say whether he would have received no jail time, a fine or a shorter stay in jail, but this was largely the result of his choice not to call the court to let them know he'd overslept.

Unfortunately, those ignorant people will be the death of us all. Here in WA where we were the first hit, we're still going to be closed for an indeterminate amount of time. And these states are opening things up after having closed later. The Federal politicians are largely to blame for failing to ensure that people and small businesses could weather the downturn. And, the extra money being tacked onto the unemployment checks alone is more than many of those front line workers make.

@mattbingen Yep, it does happen, but mostly in areas where there aren't faults and a lot of oil. And when it does happen, it tends to be much smaller earthquakes that don't really do any damage.

How is this overreach? Arguably, a shorter jail stay might have been warranted, but if we take the ability of judges to hold people in contempt and get to decide on the length, the whole system falls apart. Imagine having to have a full court proceeding every time something like this happens. You'd never get anything done. Holding people in contempt of court is a part of the system and he could have avoided this problem either by getting up on time or by calling the court immediately when he realized that he had overslept. I doubt very much that he was the first to ever oversleep for jury duty. Things like this are one of the reasons why there are alternates.

@Zero.0ne. The solution is to properly fund the police and then actually prosecute the people that are caught shoplifting. We've tried defunding the police and it hasn't worked. Arguably, it may have worked if the defunding had happened after the point where other services were able to intervene earlier, but that's not what has happened and we'll need to get the policing back before we even try to make another go of it.

@jaylu7021 Shopkeepers privilege used to allow them to detain people that had been caught shoplifting. But, it's a limited right and if the cops don't show up and the prosecutors won't prosecuted, it's not something that works. It's a limited right to detain suspects while the cops come.

While the sentence seems overly harsh to me, he brought it on himself by not calling the court as soon as he realized that he overslept for court. The judge really only had the choice of a fine or putting him in jail to think about what he had done. His life was likely fucked up due to his own choices.

@BabaYaga-yh3yi These barely release any pressure. IIRC, they're expecting an 8.0+ earthquake to hit the region. A 7.0 earthquake is significant, but would barely release any of that. Each increase of 1 magnitude is roughly 10x as much shaking and 32x as much energy released.

@yellolab09 Absolutely, the farmers out in the sticks may not have to do much to avoid this, but what about the cities? Sure, they aren't as big as in some other states, but that doesn't mean that people can't get it there. It just means that the threshhold between functioning and swamped is hit with smaller numbers. If they don't get their stuff in order, they'll max out their resources sooner. What's more, any illnesses there, will bring resources that could be used elsewhere. If they're taking the relevant precautions, then fair enough, but if it's because they're too arrogant to put proper measures into place, then f them. They should get no additional resources.

We'll see, having the weapons is probably legal in WA, as long as he's either got a permit or is carrying them visibly. And as suspicious as this behavior is, there are other possibilities. Still, this is a case of better safe than sorry and it's better that people reported it and there was a full on response before anything happened.
