The sub does have communications problems, but it seems irresponsible to me to wait that long. The longer the weight, the further the sub could have drifted before the search even started. Even under the best case scenario for a failure, the sub would have drifted a distance as it was floating to the surface and who knows what the condition was given that there was a communications failure. Seems to me that people were hoping that the sub would be able to communicate again so they wouldn't have to acknowledge that the under-tested sub had issues that future customers would find out about.

We won't know unless it's found. If the disappearance was either due to an implosion or it getting caught in the wreck, then it probably wouldn't much matter as there's no equipment in existence that could save them. If they sank to the bottom, but weren't crushed, perhaps, any other possibility, probably. At any rate, at this point, they're likely dead from dehydration or hypothermia, and if they're not now, then that's likely to happen before they run of air and the sub hasn't even been located yet. Once it's located, it would take time to raise, assuming it's not on the surface, and they can't just crack it open on the surface, it would need some time to decompress and I don't know if there's an option for that with this design.

A plane has a range of potentially thousands of miles depending upon how much fuel it's got, which represents a large portion of the ocean. After about 8-12 hours or so you can be certain that the plane is no longer in the air, whether crashed or having executed an emergency landing. In this case, it likely has drifted a bit, but the speed the water moves is significantly less than the speed of an airplane in flight.

At this point, them being on the surface is getting to be the only way they could possibly survive. There's a surch being made and while the sub is rather small, it's not that small. If it's on the surface, it will be found and that effectively does give more time as that removes the need for decompression as they'd already be at more a pressure that's more managable.

Not to mention, just dehydration after this time could already have killed one or more of them. Most people die of dehydration after 2 days without water, and it doesn't sound like it was carrying enough water to outlast the air supply. I hope to be proven wrong, but in all likelihood they died already. I do think that dying from dehydration or hypothermia is preferable to asphyxiation over such a long period of time though.

@colincampbell767 If it floated to the surface, that's not a concern, it can't be opened from the inside. In order to get it open there has to be a ship there to be able to open it.
