IKR, this is just them making explicit what was implicitly the case previously. I don't know how they can provide a web browser that responds to the user without having a license to whatever you type into the browser for the purpose of surfing. I'm fairly sure that every site that we visit that takes users inputs has similar language in there that we're giving them a license to use the material we input as it's literally the only way that things like text or images we post to share can actually be shared.

Yep, personally, Fx is my favorite, but realistically, it's not like I have much of a choice. It's mostly just Chrome based stuff or Fx unless I switch to OSX and iOS. At least, Fx isn't aggressively going after adblockers.

@BasicDevBlog It was intentionally vague because they don't know what the users are going to be using the browser to use. They're updating it because a bunch of people misinterpreted it and they needed to explain it. But, the terms that people were using the software under always involved giving them the permission that's now explicitly stated. I don't know how you use a web browser without giving the browser permission to use the data that you input into the browser to surf the web. The advertiser stuff is something that probably does require even more explanation, but considering the status quo, it's highly unlikely that they're going to be doing anything worse than what various sites are already doing via various programming tricks. And, what's the alternative? Chrome is an even more egregious abuser of users than any of what I've heard people alleging that the new Fx ToS allows, and I believe manifest 3 is here, or if it isn't, it will be shortly.

And if a similar amount of effort went into research, there would be far less comments to respond to.

@ne0n_witch FIrst off, the ToS is pretty clear that they have license to use the data to do the things that we tell the browser to do. That has literally always been the case and I'm not even sure how you use a browser that just ignores all the stuff you put into it. But, beyond that, if you accept that Fx is terrible, then what? You're basic options are buying into the iOS and OSX ecosystem and using Safari, or switching to something that uses Google's engine, and all the issues that come from that.

@soicygothlaflexico While, I do think the OP here posted an unhelpful and kind of dumb post. The thing though, is that the freaking out over Fx explicitly stating that they're going to take the stuff you enter into the browser and use it to do what you're asking it to do isn't a big deal. And, I'm not sure how people think that the browser works if Fx doesn't have that right.

He's in people's feed? I thought that channel was a cat that had this guy sitting with it talking about privacy and right to repair.

You can, and some do, but what's the point really? Every browser has some sort of a license to take the stuff you enter into it and provide it to the sites that you're navigating to do whatever it is that you're wanting to do. If you don't give that permission, then you've got this weird '90s style demo kiosk browser showing what the internet can do.

@BasicDevBlog Google's Manifest V3 pretty much guts adblocking and there's no guarantee that they won't go even further if they need to. If you want to switch, don't let the door hit you on the way out, but this level of freak out over them making explicit what was implicit previously isn't doing anybody any favors. The language around ads will probably be cleaned up, but last I heard, they were trying to get their own ad network setup where the advertisers were at least moderately limited in terms of what they could see and Fx has made a lot of progress in terms of isolating sites from each other.
