@EXROBOWIDOW They didn't necessarily need to push it out the tailpipe, but unlike most of the other emissions, it's an element, so your only real option is to either push it out the tailpipe, or find some way of trapping it. It's not like CO, O3 or NO2 that are problematic as chemicals, but the individual elements aren't of any real consequence and they are the result of chemical reactions going on in the engine.

Not really, one of the things that lead poisoning does is reduce your cognitive abilities. And there is a great deal that people won't learn if they're being paid not too.

@foo219 Also, with CFCs, the damage from that has largely been repaired and on its way to being fixed. I suspect that it's on the whole a benefit that he did that over waiting for some other technology to be discovered.

Yes, and at this point the damage done from the CFCs has largely been repaired. The hole is still there, but on the whole, it's been repairing itself. Lead was an dremains an issue, but it's important to recognize that this was happening at a time where there was still a bunch of coal power plant emissions that were putting out far worse stuff than the lead was. When I helped my dad remove the shingles from his roof in preparation for roofers coming in, there was a thick layer of coal particles covering the entire surface from about the time that Midgley was doing his inventing. Lead will be an issue for quite some time, but ultimately, it's mostly out of the air and for the most part as long as you limit your exposure to the dirt, it's probably not a major issue and I'm sure that as time goes on that there will be improvements in ways of removing it from the body when it is too much.

In all fairness, the scale of deaths from these inventions is far beyond what could be encompassed in even a very, very long video. We're talking hundreds of thousands and probably millions over the course of nearly a century, and probably more going forward. Considering the subject, it's an appropriate break from the user.
