I think people should really reevaluate the frozen foods aisle in general. There have been massive improvements made to the quality of the frozen fruits and vegetables that you can find there. This is especially helpful for singles and people on a budget that can't afford to have that head of broccoli go bad before they've had a chance to eat it. Also, a ton of things at the grocery store are frozen, a good chunk of things that just tolerate it will come in with a frozen delivery for practical reasons.

Most fruit juices are terrible when you're not suffering from temporary low blood sugar and it just gets worse if they've added more to it. Depending upon the fruit, they may not even be any better than actual candy.

If you check the ingredients label, chances are that you'll see "ascorbic acid" as one of the ingredients in an effort to replace the vitamin c that was destroyed pasteurizing it. As far as storage goes, it depends a lot on the specific product, there's even shelf stable milk out there, it just takes the correct processing and ingredients to make it happen.

@piteoswaldo They can't hide it, these things have to be labeled. They can stick a line on the ingredients for natural and for artificial ingredients, but those come from a defined list and are required to be only a small amount. As far as adding water, water would have to be on the ingredients list if it's been added to the beverage as opposed to the water that's naturally in the orange. In fact, water is a common ingredient in many things that you buy. If you want to hear about a real scam, nouget. It's in a lot of candies because it's a way of charging the customer for air. It costs basically nothing to fluff up the ingredients and give a larger appearing candy bar, but people still buy it.

Generally speaking, the less processed something like this is the better. The fiber does provide some health benefits, but I'm not sure there's really enough fiber in an orange to make much of a difference when compared with 100% orange juice squeezed directly from the orange.

The US is a very large country and it's only been in recent times where shipping the nonfrozen stuff was economical. The concentrate does require freezing, but it also uses a lot less space so in the space of a half dozen of the jugs, you can get at least a couple dozen of the cans. And, the shelf life of those cans is a long time whereas the jugs are probably only a few weeks at most. Also, a bunch of the cost of these is the shelf space and time spent stocking the item, so if you've got something that can sit there for a long time, you don't have to worry about marking it down, and you don't have to sell as much of it to justify the space.

The only way to know what the healthiest option is is to look at the ingredients label and make a comparison. One of the nice things about the concentrates is that you get to choose how much water to add as a part of the process. Yes, you can do that with jugs, but you're stuck moving it to another container if you want to.

There's a lot of that that goes on because there isn't any way of verifying the food safety of the other items in the bag. Usually when one starts to go moldy, it's only a matter of time before the other ones do because the mold you see is just the flower of the actual mold inside the food and grocery stores have no way of knowing which molds are OK and which ones aren't. That would take a mycologist and testing to know for sure. It's safer and simpler to just toss it out.

That depends on what's in the smoothy, but really both are probably best considered to be sometimes foods.
