That sort of thing is likely the only thing they're useful for other than flying over sports matches. Just about everything that you can do with them can be done with other vehicles that are already being produced. I do think that having them flying over disaster areas and picking up survivors that would normally be done via boat or helicopter is a worthwhile reason to have them, but it's questionable whether that's a better solution than remotely controlled boats.

IQ is somewhat problematic because the highest performers on the tests are often not the highest performers in the real world. Those are often the people that have slightly lower IQs. It's also typically a very narrow test of intelligence that tends to increase self-esteem and decrease the willingness of the individual to take on the sorts of risks that would lead to higher achievement in order to preserve the position of authority.

That's not surprising, a lot of the activity that goes on in the brain involves charged particles moving around. As they move, they themselves generate tiny magnetic fields that can interact with other magnetic fields.

Despite what some folks would have you believe, Pluto is as much a planet as the Earth is. Neither one actually qualifies as a planet under the current set of criteria. The Earth hasn't cleared it's orbit, so not a planet.

Why? It's not exactly relevant to daily living and there's a bunch of other stuff that people need to know now that wasn't necessary 20 years ago.

It's not really, it's a matter of priorities. Astronomy isn't relevant to most people now and unless the technology to move quickly between planets is developed, it never will be. I personally, think it's more troubling how few people realize that the Earth probably doesn't qualify as a planet at this point due to it not having cleared it's own orbit.

Bicycles don't need to counter steer unless they're going quite fast. Around here you can't go fast enough because then you have issues with either visibility or turning radius.

@derosterhase1375 Only if you're going fast enough. Around here you mostly can't without special gear. Either you're going up hill, or you don't have the visibility going down hill or it's so steep that you're on the brakes did that you don't wind up over the handlebars. Below about 15 mph or so, you can't even countersteer.

@TheMrPeteChannel Which likely won't happen due to the Hindenburg, even though that disaster was likely due to the material they used to cover the outside. The problem with these ultimately comes down to the massive volume you need in order to achieve a decent sized payload and their extremely slow speed when compared with airplanes. I think that with the advancements in computerized flight, as in the programs used to run drones, that this is likely the last, and est, shot these will have at being viable as at least now they can be held in a stationary position to do things like serve as a sky crane the OP referenced.

IQ tests likely can't be relied on when taken by the ND population as they aren't normed for us. One of the biggest issues with intelligence testing is that you can't use one test to compare different groups, each test has to be normed to the population that's being tested and as a result, you can't expect to compare the scores of European Americans with either Europeans or Africans and expect to get a meaningful result.

I can usually hold mine for about 2 and a half minutes, but I think that's probably because I've got asthma and the lung capacity was an absolute essential when I was younger. It probably started out as lung packing as my lungs themselves were fine, but it did and still does take an abnormally long time for me to completely inhale and exhale.

@Ebani The point of the water is to prove that there's no oxygen leaking around the plugs. The reflex is still there, it's just much more dangerous if you do take that breath.

Why? I'm sad and frustrated by people not knowing things that are actually important. For example, not understanding how compound interest works or the impact of tax policy in the most basic sense has on the way that the economy structures itself in response. Astronomy is interesting, but it's really not terribly relevant to people that aren't involved in space exploration and likely won't be relevant for decades to come.

@ThatDamnedGamer1 That's the theory, but there's absolutely no evidence to back it up and in every possible setting students violate their own alleged learning style regularly. The only real benefit to including considerations for learning styles is that it promotes the students' exposure to the same ideas and concept from many different perspectives. There's also some benefit in cases where somebody has a learning disorder or sensory integration issue getting it in a form that actually can be understood.

@hmcm596 There's a practicality issue here. Had the Germans foreseen the issues of static discharge, the technology likely would have died out in the '60s as commercial airliners started to catch on. These airships were marvels of the time, but it took 43 hours to cross the Atlantic. When I visited Europe it took roughly 9 hours to go from the west coast of the US to The Netherlands. Which is literally thousands of miles longer in roughly a quarter the time. If time isn't important, then you've got ships and trains that are even more efficient and already have plenty of facilities for handling the flow of goods and passengers.

In what sense? Unless they're in a field where astronomy is relevant, I'm not sure that it really matters much.There are so many other things that are important and relevant to policy on this planet. Perhaps if space travel to other planets becomes practical that might change, but right now it shouldn't be super important with all the other stuff to worry about.

At most, I could seem them being useful for a few niche applications like hovering in place for days on end to rapidly deploy temporary cell service after a natural disaster. But, there's not much that you can do with the technology that there aren't better options for these days. Especially now that quadrocopters have gotten so impressive based on advancements in computerized control systems.

@hikari4415 It's one of the reasons why the new definition they used to demote Pluto was so dumb. It's also a detail that a lot of people don't know about. Ultimately, whether or not the Earth is a planet isn't super relevant to people that aren't involved in astrophysics or something related.

@zetanax1041 In the future this may become a problem, but astronomy is really only relevant to a small portion of the population. Mainly the folks that are sending space probes out into the universe. If we get to the point of being able to send people to other planets, then it will be relevant. But for now, I'm not sure that everybody needs to know anything about everything.

@RocketSauce666 Twice exceptional often refers to having a high IQ in addition to some form of learning disorder or other neurological disability. But, it's not that tightly defined, somebody can exhibit giftedness in other ways rather than just by IQ. Being a highly gifted artist or writer would also qualify even if the individual has a normal IQ, or possibly even low one.

The actual answer would likely be none of those, or possibly all of them, without the qualifiers about most closely resembling it. I'd wager that all of them except A would pop up when flying due to the fact that you can keep a helicopter relatively steady in terms of ground speed, but also keeping it steady in terms of air speed at the same time is going to be an issue.

@GKTorn. That sort of thing is why I never tried to join. There's a pretty decent chance that I'd be able to join, the practice test they have is pretty easy. But, I've spent many years hanging out on college campuses and if I'm going to be in a group based on intelligence, I'd prefer it to be based on something practical rather than an arbitrary score on one of the approved tests.

Having lived in China teaching English to those students, I cannot emphasize just how horrible it is. The government knows that it's a horrible situation, and there has been progress made to de-emphasize that test. At this point, there is a plan B for those that fail it, but the whole point of the test is to quickly weed out the students that they don't have available space for at their colleges. If anything, it makes the problem of upward mobility even worse, as those with the power can afford to fail the test and then go overseas to get their degree. Then, when they come back, they have a rather fancy foreign degree. Despite the BS you hear in the US, the fact is that the Chinese government is well aware of how bad their educational system is and is putting a large amount of resources into making it less traditional and somewhat more western. Having students attending all those subjects and then only be tested on a couple of them is a massive waste of time, and students just go through the minimum motions they can get away with in order to not be punished.

Add enough stuff to the curriculum and if you're lucky, irrelevant things like this will be forgotten rather than things the students really need to succeed in life. Sad, but true.

Yes, but why on this topic? You could say that about basically every subject ever, but there's only so many hours in the day and learning about one irrelevant subject isn't better than learning about the latest craze on the various social networking platforms.

Intelligence testing has to be relative because there isn't a zero point to measure from. It's not like temperature, where we can base the scale at an absolute zero intelligence or have scores getting higher and higher because we set the bar at a specific concept of what 100 should be. So, psychometricians opted to base it around the mean and standard deviation when making the decisions so that it would effectively always be somewhat applicable, as being a super-intelligent person by the standards of a hundred years ago isn't super helpful if you can't navigate the streets of a modern city or operate a computer.
