The biggest challenge was probably figuring out where to look. With such a big gap between when he was last seen and when they started looking, it was a massive area to search. This is one of the reasons why some cruise ships have sensors installed to detect when somebody falls overboard so they can immediately start looking.

@paultasker9759 If they want to survive, floating is the only viable option. That is unless you're luckly enough to have something to cling to. Yes, you might have to do a little bit of swimming, but if it's much more than that, you're pretty much screwed.

There's times when I think these ships should be required to have nets that can be extended when they're out at sea. Some ships already have sensors to warn the sailors that somebody may have fallen overboard, nets that can be extended when not at port would probably end this problem for good. We've got "suicide nets" on the local bridges that people were jumping off of and it's been pretty effective at stopping that problem. I see no particular reason why ships couldn't be fitted with nets as well.

And we would have gotten away with it too, if not for those meddling sailors.

Not really, there are a lot of ways that people can respond, even when they're happy about the outcome. Shock and extreme happiness are both possibilities. But, if they were the ones that threw him overboard, then other emotions are definitely possible.
