That is true, however, it's worth noting that the rest of us do have to pay some of the cost when people ride without helmets and suffer injuries that would have been protected or reduced by wearing a helmet.

Clearly we should force the helmets, it's not like the hospital is going to be allowed to not provide treatment for the injuries attributable to the lack of helmet and insurance rates be adjusted to cover it.
2
So, do you believe that doctors, hospitals and insurance companies should have the choice not to pay for or treat the consequences of that choice? Because they currently do have to provide the services.
2
That's the thing right there. If the consequences of not wearing the helmet weren't distributed beyond the rider, making it a personal choice would be pretty reasonable.
2
When the consequences of the resulting injuries aren't borne by the rest of society, we can make helmets optional.
2
@tim-elmer There may have been some truth to that in the distant past, but the helmets I've worn have large enough visors that I can't really even see the edges.
2
I've been hit in the neck by gravel a few times, I kind of wish I had a neck protector that didn't make head checks impossible.

@boxhead6177 It's a little bit surprising because for decades the people pushing back were people who started riding and equated the experience with not wearing a helmet. That really shouldn't be the case these days and it's even worse because the bikes go so much faster and there's so much more traffic involved.
1
So, can doctors and insurance companies decide not to provide care when that goes badly? I wear a helmet when I ride, it doesn't seem fair to me to have to pay for the consequences of other people choosing not to.

If bike riders wouldn't wear such stupid helmets, that would be a better stat. But, very few bicycle riders wear proper helmets, I'm not sure that a bike rider needs a full helmet, but they certainly need a 3/4 helmet.
1
@Carlisho That's different and some states allow you to do that when traffic is stopped, but not when it's moving.
1
You pretty much always have to have some sort of eye protection while riding. Getting a bit of grit in your eye or even just wind sucks.
1
The issue is that it's fine until it's not.
1
You can still be pulled over for that. The actual limit is one aspect, but in general you have to be able to operate the vehicle, any substance that impacts that can be cause for an arrest, and sometimes just not having the reaction time due to things like sleep deprivation or prescription pills can as well.

@stephenbarabas6286 Often times being permitted to filter at stop lights is a nice sweet spot.
