  1. You forgot to mention rivet versus clip chains. It's worth learning how to do the rivets as it eliminates the possibility of something happening to the clip that allows for the chain to snap around and destroy parts of the bike as well as whatever is behind you.

  2. Yep, but you also lose a ton of power with the shaft. IMHO, belt drives are probably the best compromise in terms of power efficiency and maintenance. But, for the smallest bikes and ones that are intended for higher performance, really require a chain though.
