You should be able to turn it off completely to practice panic braking. You'll never stop faster than with threshold braking and with threshold braking the ABS doesn't activate. The ABS system kicking in will slightly increase the stopping distance, even if by a little bit. ABS is great for people who don't know how to ride or are riding in conditions they shouldn't be riding in. It's also great if you're riding a larger, heavier bike that's harder to manage at low speed.

It can be useful trying to make a panic stop in the rain if you haven't practiced that. Last big rain I was in, I ended up fish tailing something fierce while coming into a stop light. Didn't go down, but did wind up a few feet into the intersection when I had to release and reapply. Would have been nice to have had ABS available. It's also somewhat useful if you have a sudden change in traction that leads to a locking of the wheel or if you're riding in the rain and the water on the rotor suddenly evaporates enough for the pad to bite. That being said, I think the case for ABS is somewhat exaggerated. If you're riding defensively and within your limits, the likelihood of needing it is fairly low and it's usually not going to kick in in situations where it would be a fatality.

As long as you can disable to ABS completely to practice, I don't see that as a problem. I developed my braking skill by firmly braking on steep hills. My next motorcycle will likely have ABS that can be completely disabled, just so that I can periodically disable it to practice braking.

Totally agree. I want ABS, but I also want to be able to turn it off when I need to. Practicing panic braking should be done without ABS as the shortest stopping distance will come just before the ABS kicks in.
