@Marco-cl9pb An automatic car these days might have as many as 9 or 10 gears that it uses. The only place you'll see that many gears is in a big rig where they likely have even more gears due to the size and fuel efficiency requirements. A slipper clutch or semi-auto transmission is a pretty good compromise between needing to control what gear you're in and not wanting to do a lot of work when shifting.

The point seems to be to get the audience to consider whether they really need that extra gear next time they are in the market for a bike. Some people really love shifting, but for other people, it might make more sense to select a motorcycle with fewer gears as they might not even need the extra ones if they're mostly riding in town.

My Ninja 250 has 6 speeds, but The 6th speed isn't particularly necessary. I can hit free way speeds with fifth and I'm not redlining. If I'm on the freeway for long periods, I'll shift into it to drop the revs for efficiency, but I have to drop to fifth if I want to pass somebody and going up over Steven's Pass, IIRC, I was in 4th gear near the top so that I had the power to get over it. Most of my daily street riding is done in either 3 or 4th.

My main concerns with automatic transmissions and motorcycles are that it makes it easier to go faster than you intend to, leaves you having poor acceleration at key moments and makes it difficult to properly engine brake when needed. A semi-automatic transmission or auto clutch though are potentially really helpful, especially if you're in traffic and having to shift back and forth without tiring the hands.

That's where having a chain drive is nice, you can mess with the gearing ratio. For belt and shaft drive motorcycles, it's not going to work out.

You probably don't need to use all of those gears. I've got a Ninja 250 and I do most of my riding in 3rd or 4th. I'll only touch 5th on the highway and 6th only on the freeway when I'm going a longer distance and not wanting to pass. If you're being annoyed by that, consider changing the gearing ratio.

That 6th gear probably isn't even necessary. The 6th gear on my Ninja 250 only gets exercised when I'm on the freeway for longer periods of time. Otherwise, the little savings in gas is offset by the ability to better accelerate at speed.
