@aaronhiggs In a sense you're right, but my hands tend to cramp up when I'm riding in stop and go traffic. Also, the shifting aspect of the vehicle makes it harder to pass the licensing exam. The skill doesn't take that long to learn, but it's a skill when the beginning riders are already learning so many things over 2 days.

Yes, that and how bad the traffic has gotten in some areas. Just yesterday, I had somebody pull out in front of me. I was driving my car, so I was able to slam on my brakes, but I doubt I would have been able to stop in time on my motorcycle. That kind of thing is always a possibility when you're riding the freeway and the lane next to you is almost entirely stopped, but your lane is still moving at regular speeds.

Here in WA there's a fee attached to maintaining the endorsement that's used to subsidize the classes. They're usually about half that price and usually the motorcycles seem to be fine.

If they'd replace the switch with a foot lever, I'd totally go for it.

I agree, for me personally, riding a motorcycle where I shifted, but the motorcycle handled the clutch would be awesome for traffic, but much beyond that would make me nervous. I like having control over the gear ratio and the process itself isn't that bad.

Most vehicles are automatics because it's nearly impossible to hit the fleet efficiency requirements without more gears. Modern cars will have up to 9 gears. Traditional manual cars tend to top out at about 5. Big rigs go up to like 18 gears, but also require a lot of specialized learning to manage so many gears. Motorcycles have largely been able to avoid that as the fuel efficiency is much better than what cars typically see.

Traffic is the main reason why I would consider switching to an automatic. At some point, I might get a small automatic, just for riding around town in bad traffic.

@RazorbackDevil Depends how bad the traffic is, I ride in traffic a lot and it doesn't really get much better.

Why? There was a point decades ago when knowing how to drive a stick was in some way advantageous. At this point, manuals have worse fuel economy and require more effort to operate.

I'd love to have an electric motorcycle with a rate limiter lever replacing the normal shift lever. That would be so sweet, it could be programmed to behave a bit like a transmission.

It would be cool to be able to switch that on and off. Riding in traffic gets really annoying after a while when the clutch hand starts to cramp...
