The point he ignores is that this gears are shorter because there are more gears. The current Porsche 911 automatic has 8 gears from what I'm seeing, the manual only had 6 gears, the result is that those early gears are going to be shorter. It also means that the automatic will spend more time in the power band. This has been known for ages. No matter what you do, automatics are just at a point where they can do most things better than a manual can. Sure, they aren't as fun and there are a few situations where manual is still better, but a manual electric basically isn't ever going to be a thing due to them not needing a transmission to convert engine speed. This isn't gearing the manual to lose, it's just how you lay them out of you've got the ability to just add additional gears.
