  1. They probably didn't fire everybody immediately, they were probably fired effectively the next day, at least anybody that they needed in order to shut the building down.

I have heard of restaurants closing midmeal, but at that point nobody had paid for their meals, the typical contract of sorts for sit down dining is that you order and eat first, then settle up at the end of the meal. So, if they shutdown midmeal, you haven't yet given them the money and can at least negotiate over what portion of the meal you'll be paying for. Worst case, they wrap up what you ordered and you pay for that. In this case, I'd wager that this was a tax related closure or they had one of their loans called and had to repay by signing over the resort. Years ago, I was working security in one of the local highrises when one of the businesses went under. They were fine one day and the next day the bank called their loans and they didn't have enough cash on hand to pay up. The result was that they had to immediately shutdown their operations and file for full liquidation in bankruptcy court. They were a profitable business, but they didn't have the cash on hand to settle the debt and as such had to close after more than a century in business.
