Yes, also keep in mind that this is more than most people are going to make. That's more than you'd make if you were being paid $30 an hour, even without considering taxes. Meaning that it would take years to pay back even a short period of incarceration. By the time you get to the 5-10 year range, you're never going to pay that off. Even if you are convicted at age 30, you'd spend the next 10 years in prison and get out at 40. You'd then likely be looking at minimum wage jobs and the debt would not be paid by the time you're old enough to even think about retirement. Yes, I do get that there needs to be punishment, but I do have to suspect that it's as you're suggesting, probably not going to cover the cost of incarceration.
