In line with that mailbox thing, I used to work for one of the major shipping companies. A lot of people don't know this, but stealing a package from a UPS or Fed Ex distribution facility is a federal offense, not just a state offense. I assume that this is for the same reason that mail related crimes are typically federal offenses, but a lot of people don't realize that it's not just USPS facilities that receive that projection, it's any of the interstate mail delivery services. IANAL, so I don't know if that applies to services that only operate within the confines of one state. I assume this is the case because it used to be extremely difficult to know at which point in the process the package was stolen, meaning that if a package is shipped from Michigan to California via truck, there's any number of jurisdictions in which the package could have been stolen and it's simpler to allow the feds to handle it as they've got jurisdiction for federal crimes everywhere in the country.

I thought the mattress tag law was just something that applied to people selling them. Private citizens not engaged in the sale of mattresses were exempt from it. But, that being said, it's a tag, I've never removed one because there's no point, it's already under multiple layers of cloth when I sleep in my bed. Or maybe I always do, but you'd never know because there wouldn't be probable cause to get the necessary warrant to check. :-P
