@veleriphon Don't buy into an HOA unless you know the rules, are OK with the rules and are OK with the potential for new and more intrusive rules in the future. I live in a building with an HOA and they've been pretty good over all. But, a change of board members to petty tyrants could change that.

@randomletters9628 Yes, situations like this are good examples of where a preliminary injunction is appropriate, providing that the plaintiff can demonstrate that the necessary likelihood of winning. But, in that case, I'd expect a win for the business owner.

@DVankeuren Precisely, they can do all sorts of things in this sense. They could opt to hunt men for sport and allow a pack of wolves to manage their finances. It wouldn't be legal and the moment somebody won the inevitable suit, it would be done, but you can do anything at all, until somebody puts a stop to it. In all likelihood, both those cases would receive an immediate injunction and it wouldn't even get to continue while the court case proceeded.

You're right, that's not how amortization works. Amortization is a way of accounting for the reduced value of certain assets. It's a way of recognizing that things like copyrights and patents will eventually be worth zero and keeping track of it over time. Independent of actual income from the asset, it's just an expense.
