The whole practice falls apart pretty quickly if things are being notarized for which the notary hasn't actually seen the person signing. I've personally thought that the notary not doing anything to protect the documents against things being inserted or removed was kind of funny. In China, they would spread the entire contract out and stamp across the pages with their chop and made it a lot harder to actually slip something in there or remove it as doing so would make it virtually impossible to fake, but in the US, that seems to be far less of a concern. In this case, we'll have to see what happened with the notary, because while the notary could be in on it or screwed up, there's also the possibility that they found somebody that has the same legal name to come in and present a signature, although that would likely show in terms of the signature not matching other signatures that are presumably on record in various other places and easy enough to check by people not the notary.

Lawyers are officers of the court and if they're allowed to falsify documents or even turn a blind eye to it when they should be paying attention, it would completely destroy the system for everybody, not just for cases in which that particular attorney was involved.
