  1. That's more or less how it should be. If the receiver breaks it off, the ring should go back. If it's mutual, presumably, it should also go back as they'd both be in the same situation they would have been with regard to the ring if they hadn't gotten engaged. The last one is dicey, but probably would result from whatever witnesses related say.
