The worst part of these programs is that the companies providing the "free" tax software are the ones that are lobbying the government to not come out with their own simplified software. In most cases, the IRS could just send you most of the forms prefiled with information they already have and have you either just pay or issue corrects/provide informations on deductions with supporting documentation. There's no reason that it can't be done here for individuals filing their taxes. Businesses are always going to have more to fill out, but that's because somebody has to file the paperwork and nobody wants the IRS to go into every account and see what's there.
