I think it depends a bit on how close the course is to the house. I live a couple hundred feet from a golf course with a green band around it. If the golf balls are flying into the yard with this kind of speed, it means that the designers screwed up. They shouldn't be having the golfers teeing off in those locations in those directions. From what I've seen of the neighboring golf course, the only places where they're hitting balls in the direction of the fences or even along the fences are far enough away that most of the energy and speed of the ball are dissipated before they have a chance to clear the fence. Between the distance and the trees, I don't think I've ever seen a ball more than a few dozen feet from the fence.

This is why golf courses should be designed so that shots aren't being made along the fence or too close to the fence. People are going to hook and slice their shots and both will happen on the same hole. The physics of how to design this isn't that hard, although wind patterns can result in a fence being tall enough most days, but have an errant ball or two over the course of years.

That was what I was wondering. An unimproved property is basically just land that's sitting there as it always has. I could sort of understand if it's a large property and nobody has built anything on the golf course side, but that would be pushing it a lot.

@davidfrederick9973 Precisely, they weren't told to consider that which effectively hands the win to the plaintiff automatically. There's nothing in this that suggests that a new jury won't issue the same verdict. I'd expect that the defendants will see the money that they initially were ordered to pay and just settle the suit before retrial. Especially given how few people are likely to consider having windows broken dozens of times to be reasonable.
