Yes and don't forget about the addresses that get a letter as well as a number like 221B Baker Street from Sherlock Holmes and all those weird addresses in rural areas which are designed to deal with the situation where houses might be a significant distance from each other.

I was thinking that, but it depends on how the house was specified in the listing and related contracts. If the house they live in is the one that matches the paperwork, then likely the address for the listing matches the newly renovated house, which means that it may not be as simple as just changing a few numbers on the listing and in the contracts to make it work. Such a change could potentially just lead to this issue popping up the next time somebody sells one of those two properties. At least as of now, both are held by the same owner, which should make it a lot easier and less expensive to fix.

@jaykoerner No, it's not, adverse possession wouldn't work in most jurisdictions unless you both knew about it and were doing so in opposition to the wishes of the owner. If the property owner doesn't know, then the clock doesn't start ticking and if they're OK with it, you'll never get there.

@sunchips5 Adverse possession wouldn't work as they own both plots and for adverse possession to work, it needs to be adverse to the wishes of the property owner. They should have title insurance as that would still kick in even years later since the error is just being found now. Although, in this case the title insurance company would likely just pay for the cost of making the appropriate filings to fix the error.

@randysmith9715 Yes, but that's a lot more involved than just knowing which side of the street a given address is on, they're also expected to know what the address is for a good chunk of bars, restaurants and places that passengers might want to go.

@powerofk There's also issues with addresses on the corner where there's no way of knowing what that address is going to be, if you've got the address, you'd likely know which corner, but there's no telling what address the USPS is going to give it. It can cause issues for things like liquor licensing that require an address if the one you're finally given is on the other side of the building.

@leyrua My parents apparently don't own either of their fences because when they moved in both neighbors were claiming ownership over them. But, it doesn't really matter beyond the fact that those neighbors are now responsible for replacing and maintaining them as you don't really have usable land under the fence anyways.
