Apparently, people in Oregon couldn't be trusted to pump their own gas. I hope that there isn't a rash of gas station fires, as people can't figure out that you can't smoke.

@Thanosisnotreal Perhaps it's because of my age, but I don't use those, I just use it at full speed manual control until it cuts me off. This isn't like in olden times before there were sensors in there to stop the flow when you filled the tank. The autofill position used to get people killed when they'd be going in and out of the vehicle and get static build up that would ignite the flames. With modern emissions controls, that shouldn't be possible anymore, but I doubt the problem will ever go away.

@apparition13 Yes, I'd expect them to find ways of nudging people over to the self-service pumps even without a discounted rate. I'd wager that they'll cut back on more and more of the auxilary services being offered to try and get the cost of an attendant as low as possible and that eventually enough people will be used to pumping their own gas that the service will only be for the elderly and disabled. Around here, things are self-service because I don't live in NJ or OR, but there is a button to get an attendant out to help pump. (Obviously, assuming there's one there at the time, some gas stations don't have anybody there in the evening or at night.

You've been allowed to pump your own gas for motorcycles for ages, it's just been for cars. I guess they just didn't want to be sued for screwing up some biker's very expensive paint job. I wonder a bit about how many gas station attendants have gotten cancer from all the exposure to gas over the last few decades. The amount that a person might be exposed to filling their own tank is minimal, but multiply that across an entire week and it adds up.

I'm not sure why they would. Although, the only time I've driven in Oregon, I was close to the border and riding a motorcycle, so I was allowed to pump my own gas as they're not required to pump it for motorcycles. They probably aren't even allowed to for liability reasons.

@chazw3x It's probably mostly convention and what you're used to. The only real difference is that with the gas station attendant, you're outside and trusting them to go into the gas station and ring you up for the gas, rather than booking it to the nearest getaway car or copying the numbers.
