It's been my belief for many years now that if they can't predict gum disease based on flossing habits, then they shouldn't be recommending it. Part of why my gums are in the state that they are is that I was dumb enough to follow the advice I was being given. The dentist would keep saying that I wasn't flossing deep enough, but when I'd show him what I was doing, he said it was fine. The worst gums I have are the ones that are the easiest to floss. Flossing is mostly about having a plausible excuse to blame the patient as the dental bills increase.
