  1. They absolutely have been using racial politics to divide people so that they continually vote for politicians that won't do anything to help the average citizen. The whole business of "white privilege" and "white supremacy" require an almost complete ignorance of the racial history of the US to accept. For virtually the entire history of the US white ethnic groups viewed each other in much the same way that people of color are viewed and the definition of white has continually be redefined. The Klan would burn crosses in Catholic yards as well as other groups. This isn't something that's very convenient to people that are trying to spin the narrative that race was always a major driver of these things, because the concept of race that we're using didn't even exist prior to the post-war period.

  2. It's largely a matter of media consolidation. There's excellent reporting being done by smaller organizations, but it's expensive having a reporter at city hall everyday in case something happens. Similarly investigative journalism can be incredibly expensive as it can take weeks or even months to fully investigate a story.
