Having lived in the 2nd world, the US is nowhere near that point. We can still avoid falling to that level, bribery isn't yet as widespread as you'd see in a genuinely 2nd or 3rd world country. It's still mostly the rich and powerful, in a 2nd world country you'd typically see small and mid-sized businesses as well as ordinary people engaged in the same kind of bribery to get normal business done. Sadly though, this is the direction we're moving towards and unless we start seeing establishment candidates on both sides being successfully primaried by candidates that at least care about good policy and refuse to take the bribe money, it may come down to an outright guerilla campaign of assassinations to prevent a further slide.

McConnell isn't much better, he's only gotten things done by having a majority and benefiting from the complete inability of the Democrats to identify principles and then stick to said principles.
