  1. Part of the issue is that it is rather subjective. This wasn't a poll where they were asking people to rank different aspects of the states, they were just voting the state up or down with respect to the other one. Some states like, WA and CA in particular have significant cultural rifts internally and you can't really say that Northern California or Western Washington are much like Southern California or Eastern Washington respectively. Depending upon where you're thinking of when ranking those states, you can come up with very big differences of opinion.

I personally hate D.C. because it's all the way on the other coast, whenever I tell people where I'm from, I have to explain that I'm not from D.C. and they've bogarted cultural treasures that we have to fly all the way across the country if we want to see them. We fund many of those cultural opportunities with federal taxes, but anybody on the West Coast basically doesn't get to see them with any regularity as we're effectively giving up a day going and a day coming in order to go. Add to it the cesspool that is the capital and I'd prefer if we just ejected the city from the country and be done with it.
