  1. In the US even when you do have insurance and everything goes as it's supposed to, you can still wind up with a large bill. About a decade back I had a heat stroke and wound up in the ICU. The total bill was roughly $14k IIRC, including the ambulance. The amount I paid out of pocket for the 3 days in the hospital was around $1k. If you don't have that kind of money, which most Americans don't, then you're still screwed. Most Americans before the pandemic did not have $400 to pay an unexpected bill like that.
