That's the thing. I worked my butt off to get the state to cover my first 2 years and my parents paid the second 2 years. I then paid the next year with a grant for work I had done and wound up paying for the rest more or less out of pocket. I wound up with a total of $3k in student loans. Why should my family and myself be on the hook for all of that when other folks are getting tens of thousands of dollars for being irresponsible?

This is one of my concerns. I made decisions about which schools to attend and how far to go in part based upon the fact that I'd be paying nearly all of it. As a man who was born into a white, middle-class family, I wasn't going to get anything that wasn't given to everybody else. Even when I did qualify for work study, the college chose to give it to other people, which meant that I had very few choices for work while in school. Right now I've got about $3k in debt and that's about all that I've accrued outside my family and if this goes through, it's a slap in the face to me as I'll still have to pay basically all the schooling I've gotten, but the irresponsible folks with get a huge boost. If I had known they were going to waive the debt, I too could have gotten loans and taken that money and invested it or just had fun with it. Waiving the debt is just one big middle finger to those that were responsible.

Giving everybody a check for $50k would make more sense. I don't get why those that were irresponsible are always those that get bailed out.
