The thing about the Iliad is that it has good and bad translations. Not all translations are as easily read as others. That being said, just because something is a classic, doesn't mean that everybody is going to enjoy it. It might be that that particular book just isn't for you. I thought the same thing about the Lord of the Rings when I first tried reading my dad's copy from the 60s, but more recent editions are both easier to read and more enjoyable as all the various errors that were made with it were fixed.

IIRC, that one was heavy in terms of the subject matter, but was a relatively straightforward book.

One of the wonderful things about right now is that even if you do have learning disorders and the like, audio books have never been so accessible. And, in many cases, ebooks are also available that can help in terms of making the text easier to read.

That's often the case, they're the classics in part because they were accessible enough for normal people to be able to read and appreciate. Most books don't get boosted the way that Moby Dick did by a bunch of Melville fans. More often, it's published for a mainstream audience and catches fire more naturally.

I'd wager it depends which classics, most of them are pretty accessible, but then there are others that require a fair amount of effort due to the language drifting over time.
