@jnorton8402 And I'm personally skeptical that they wouldn't have been at least as happy with a mermaid tale of African origin, given that this is just cultural appropriation and that it kind of just encourages the abandonment of any black or African culture.

LOL, I bought that series on DVD a while back. It's a shame that it got so few episodes for what was such a great show. That being said, I refused to watch this movie because it's pretty disrespectful that there's this trend of returning things to the culture of origin, just so long as that culture isn't European, in which case we need to reimagine all these characters as people of color. What's worse, is that this reimagining doesn't even help out in the long run. It sucks the air out of the room for stories that would more naturally fit people of different ethnic backgrounds. I'm sure that somewhere on one of many of Africa's coasts there's some variant of a mermaid tale that could have been a movie, but won't because rather than creating a new movie, Disney opted to just race-swap Ariel.
