Around here, we have the largely agricultural half of the state routinely voting to screw over the largely urban half of the state while everything they do is subsidized by the folks on the urban side of the state. What they don't realize, is that the folks on the urban side of the state don't need them. We can import food from other states or from other countries. But, they do need us, as we have the closest ports and we are the ones that have been subsidizing their roads. We're the closest markets for them that are willing to pay the most as their stuff is freshest for us and often worth a bit more because of that. But, they keep voting to screw us over and then whining about how they don't have as much of a say in what happens in government and completely missing the fact that they don't have as many people, so their policies aren't going to be popular enough to pass if they're continually just voting to screw over the folks in the other parts of the state.

@josepheridu3322 He also did more for the American people than anybody else post FDR.

Yes, I used to work in a grocery store and there were a bunch of stickers everywhere calling attention to items that were eligible for purchase with the cards. It's not like you get to buy anything and everything in the grocery store, there is a list of what can and can't be bought with those funds.

@ One of the issues with the programs is that there's a hard cut off, you can easily earn just enough to no longer qualify for benefits, but not enough to be able to afford to lose the benefits. It leads to that sort of thing where people don't have much of an incentive to get a better job unless it's a lot better than what they've got, which is harder than getting a job that pays just a bit more.

@JulieHerrick Yes, also keep in mind that there are provisions to pay teens less than the minimum wage, they could continue the carve otu and just raise the minimum wage for everybody else.

@ Minimum wage + welfare is supposed to guarantee a basic standard of living. There shouldn't be a lot of people in that situation, but it's an increasingly common thing as more and more of the money that should be going to the workers gets kept by degenerates like Musk and the other robber barons.

You can thank the do nothing Democrats for that. Obama could have whipped the votes to get a public option, he probably could have put everybody on the same health plan that members of congress get and then just done a publicity tour telling the people that the GOP was trying to prevent them from being on the same plan that he and members of congress get to use. But, he started with a heritage foundation proposal and watered that down even more because he wouldn't whip votes in his own party when he had control of both houses of congress. It didn't even need to be complicated legislation, he could have just passed legislation that dictated that the medicare age was going down 2 or 3 years every year until everybody was covered and that the funding for it was not subject to the budget cap. It would have taken like a couple days to draft and all of the effort could have been put into publicizing the benefits and bashing the GOP for opposing it.

@TrackerRoo You say that like the Democrats would actually fight for any of that. They didn't under Obama, and they wouldn't have under HRC or Harris. Biden, to his credit, did at least do some stuff to help workers, but his legacy is going to be based on his failure to bolster the guardrails to prevent or reduce the harm from an out of control SCOTUS and POTUS.

@ I don't think there should be any restrictions on the money, so long as it's spent at a grocery store. Well, perhaps no alcohol or smokes. The people on these programs use the money for sensible things far more often than some folks would have you believe. I used to pick orders for food stamp recipients using online pickup and I never saw any of them ordering weird things or amounts of luxury food that weren't in a typical quantity. Most of the time, I didn't even know that it was a foodstamps order until they arrived with their card to pay.
