@N3s0_wastaken Being able to sign up isn't the standard when it comes to research. The whole thing goes by the human experimentation panel at whatever institution is sponsoring the research and only the things that pass that are allowed to seek out volunteers. Without that, no reputable researcher will touch it. It's rather unfortunate, but given the kinds of experimentation that were going on prior to those rules being put into place, there was hardly much of an option. The Nazis and Imperial Japanese were horrific and the American researchers weren't as far behind as they should have been. Some of the research which participants were effectively forced into was only somewhat less harmful. The main difference was that the American researchers stopped shy of torture for the sake of torture, but some of it was effectively torture. The unfortunate bit is that it does limit the kind of subjects can be settled scientifically, but that's a small price to pay compared with the suffering that was caused by the experiments on people that had limited capacity to say no.
