Property tax is arguably the only tax the normal people should be paying. There are a lot of government services that only exist due to people owning those properties and the tax encourages the local authorities to do things that increase property values. I wish people would stop complaining about property taxes, If you're actually paying property taxes directly, then you're either wealthier than average or you are incredibly irresponsible and deserve what's coming.

Having no property taxes means that the government has no incentive to provide protection from fire or criminal activities. No incentive to educate the people living there or to put things in place like improved roads and things that tend to increase property values. Even just freezing property tax increases can lead to issues like you see in CA where prop 1 prevents the state from increasing the taxes paid on properties in most situations.

You're not, you're paying for the government to provide services so other people can't claim it to be theirs as well as the ability to drive o roads to get to it. Arguably, property tax is the only tax that should actually exist.

Not having a property tax is a give away to the rich people who were able to buy in at the expense of the younger people that haven't been able to. And would then have a harder time doing so as the taxes needed for essential services would have to come from other places.

@mightypancake2211 Paying taxes in insufficient amounts by those that have money is why that stuff never happens. It is a lot more expensive to do any of that stuff when you're not caught up on the routine need.

@mightypancake2211 Who is losing half their paycheck in an area that has those problems? And, it absolutely is those folks fault for continuing to vote for people that aren't promising to fix those things and also aren't fixing them. But, you're completely full of it if you're paying half your paycheck and having those problems. That's not a normal thing in any developed country I know of.

TBH, property taxes are arguably the most legitimate taxes you can have. As far as schools go, the issue there is that when the courts forced WA to properly fund education at the state level, it resulted in Seattle and a few of the more populated areas to send even more money than normal to parts of the state that didn't have their stuff together. The city winds up funding most of the state, while most of the rest of the state keeps sending politicians to the capital to undermine the city's ability to generate money whenever possible.

@ How is it unfair? You guys got to buy property when it was affordable, the younger folks didn't. Why should the younger people have to subsidize the rich that screwed us over in terms of economic policy?
1
@ It doesn't. Specifically what law does this violate?
1
@ Why not? DO they cut you off from police and fire protection? DO they roll up the roads leading to your house? Are trucks no longer allowed to deliver things to you over public streets? A lot of young people will never be able to afford homes, why give the elderly yet another giveaway at our expense?

@user-bg2oi4bz3p That's simple, you take on a roommate. That's what they did during the great depression. Fewer home owners were destroyed by it compared with renters.
