Iran is kind of complicated. I have Iranian in-laws that speak openly about wanting the US to stage a coup to re-establish the Shah. It surprises me that they don't seem to realize that they have the Ayatollah over there because the US already tried to reinstate the Shah only to have the people revolt and leading to the current state of affairs. (Admittedly, they had relatives that worked for the Shah in arts and education, so probably not the most accurate depiction of popular sentiment) Iran itself is kind of an interesting case where it was a relatively liberal place in terms of personal freedoms in that part of the world under the Shah, but clearly there were issues that led to the revolution.
