lol, Spanish isn't a common language? I live in a part of the US that's nowhere near Mexico and I'll sometimes hear people speaking in Spanish. I'm genuinely confused as to where one could go in the US where that's not going to be the case.

LOL, I was wondering where you were going with that until I hit the last few words. Bravo.

I think over time, there's more interest by Americans in terms of getting to experience other cultures in a way that's a bit more authentic, but I'm sure that is a long ways off. I wonder how many of the "Canadians" that people see abroad are just Americans that have manners and don't want to deal with the guilt by association of the jerks.

Just imagine being promised a city view room and realizing that all the houses had white foamy roofs.

@gabrielesolletico6542 Yep, there are degrees. It's one thing to repair something that was destroyed recently, or engage in ongoing maintenance using techniques of the era it was built in, but rebuilding something that's pretty much only been ruins in modern history kind of misses the point. We can't preserve everything forever, there just isn't enough space. I would love if nothing would ever change in terms of cities, but there are a great deal of issues that come of that.

In all fairness, some countries do have a sort of a touristy bubble where everything is geared towards that. Especially countries that are poorer, but relatively stable with relatively low violence.

@101steel4 I do wonder at what point British and American English are going to be different enough to justify a name change for American.

@SilverRagaire Yep, apart from Canada and Mexico, there aren't a lot of countries that we can go to that don't involve an entire day each way dedicated to dealing with traveling. But, there's a ton of stuff we can do without leaving the country that don't use so much precious time.

@phoenix-tt A lot of Roman buildings were built like that. And actually, you see a fair amount of that in the US as well. If you look at aerial pictures of cities with buildings that are still there from before affordable air-conditioning, a lot of them will be shaped like letters of the alphabet to increase both the natural light and the ability to use windows for ventilation.

@jensschroder8214 Canadians speak American English, as in North American English. It's still close enough to British English to not get a separate name.
