We can, it's just that the politicians prioritize tax breaks for the rich and powerful.

Blame the corporations and wealthy for not paying their taxes then. The money spent on illegal immigration is not that much compared with the money that the wealthy aren't paying in taxes.

They are though. We screwed up many of those countries, especially the ones south of us. They work here doing jobs that Americans can't or won't do, and send money back to relatives living in struggling countries.

No Democrats support that. Many do support loosened requirements, but I don't know of any that support outright open borders. And, it probably wouldn't be an issue, even if they did. Europe has had open borders within the EU for decades without much in the way of trouble.

Who is getting free education? Just because people aren't here legally, does not mean that they aren't paying taxes. They mostly do pay taxes, as they don't want to run afoul of the IRS. ICE may be feckless at times, but the IRS will straight up track you down no matter where you are to get their money. Just remember that of all the criminal things that Al Capone did, it was tax charges that ultimately put him behind bars.

Around here the city has been buying up such facilities for housing for the homeless. The problem is that the areas with a homeless problem tend not to have much spare capacity. The same presumably goes for the places where these undocumented immigrants are being bused. Liberal parts of the country are mostly doing pretty well, so fewer of those types of facilities can be converted into housing as they're in use.

Yes, that's how that works. If you can't get them deported, then why should they be permitted to send them to other states to deal with?

A large part of it has to do with numbers. I'm not sure what the current population of undocumented people in the US is, but last time I heard a number, it was 11m. It's kind of an old number, and probably high given how much deportation has been going on the last few years, but even if it doubled, it probably still wouldn't be enough spending to make much of a dent on those problems. As far as lowering the age goes, there's a simple and bipartisan solution that the politicians refuse to use. Simply bump the cap on the payroll taxes that fund the program. Increasing it to even $200k of taxable income would make a huge difference.

@Tpforbunghole I believe that's for medicare. Social security is higher and getting worse over time as the corrupt crooks running the government refuse to fix the program to deal with the relatively small generations coming. The program uses current worker dollars to fund current retirees as the main source of income. You are today paying for the people who came before you and the folks currently paying will be paid by the next generation. The problem is that it doesn't handle the massive swings in generation size or the comparative weakness in wage growth at the bottom. The part that's actually taxed. It frustrates me that people whine about the social security payments that they get now, even though they had decades of generally good economy to work with, and they've opposed the policies that would allow the current workers the same opportunity. Meanwhile, for the younger generations, there's a real possibility of getting less than what we put in, after having our paychecks robbed for decades by corporations.

They're tax paying residents as well, I don't see a problem with some of the collected money being spent helping them.

Your anger is focused in the wrong direction. This is a wedge issue intended to distract from the reason we don't have money for handouts to more people. If the rich and corporations would pay their taxes, we'd have plenty of money to ensure that everybody has a home and that everybody is getting appropriate medical care. Jeff Bezos alone has the money to end homelessness in America and still have tens of billions of dollars left. The rich just choose to bribe politicians and go on fake space trips than do anything about it.
