  1. Honestly, you'd probably survive. Only a fraction of those in the military see actual combat operations, most are involved with the intelligence and logistics that are required to make that work.It's one of the reasons why it's so problematic for people to just assume that because somebody is a vet that they've seen things or are a damaged killing machine.

  2.  @eugenecbell  I disagree, it would be sad if that wasn't the case. I for one would not want to live in a country where that sort of thing was normal for young people to have to deal with.

  3. That tends to be how people wind up with PTSD. There is no inherent reason to it, but we can always choose to create a silver lining from that sort of thing by living our best possible life and making the world just a little bit better each day. I'm not a vet, but between medical emergencies, attempted murder and motorcycle misadventures, I often wonder why precisely it is that I'm still here. And that first bit is honestly the best I've been able to come up with other than sheer luck.

  4.  @FantomWireBrian  I think that's fairly common and probably a defense mechanism. My Dad served in Vietnam and he was the same way about it. It was just a job in his words. The most recent I've heard him speak about it was that it was probably not something that he should have been involved in. And mind you that was somewhere around 50 years later. As somebody that's had a fair number of near death scrapes, I can tell you that being nonchalant about it is probably the only reasonable response that won't result in death. Far too often people freak out or push things too far, being relaxed and accepting that things may not go your way is pretty much a must when the stakes get high.

  5.  @retiredyeti5555  That's not surprising. I had a great uncle who invaded during the D-Day invasion and I can't imagine how much that must have screwed people up afterwards. Probably the only kindness in it was that for many of them, it was over in a matter of minutes.
