Which, is really how it should be, apart from the fact that mothers that just lost a child that early shouldn't be in fear of prosecution if they didn't commit any crimes.

  6.  @jenshaw8085  The thing is that even if you are careful and do everything right, rapists are still a thing. Abstinence is 100% effective, but only if you actually abstain. If teens could abstain until they were ready to have kids, there wouldn't be much of a debate about all of this and with teen pregnancy rates being what they are, it's pretty clear that some portion can't wait.

  7. Because we have a legal system that's based on the notion that people are innocent until proven guilty. And you probably wouldn't like to live in a society where there isn't the presumption of innocence. As far as violent crimes go, it's not like they just get let out unmonitored.

  9. Quite possibly, although the abortion laws being what they are in many states, it simply being natural causes isn't automatically enough to not have legal problems that come as a consequence of a dead infant. Especially, if we're talking about a baby that died shortly after being born.

  11.  @Orchidaceous1  And it may be as simple as the infant dying of something along the lines of seizure related complications at night when she was sleeping. That nearly happened to me, if the seizure hadn't happened when my parents were in the room and the county didn't have ER doctors that travel around the county to stabilize people in situations like that, I'd probably be dead. But, unlike this case, the state wasn't arresting women for infants that died of natural causes or for miscarriages.

  13. As long as the box is set up to clean, the only real issue with a dead baby being dropped off is potential trauma to the people that open the box to get whatever is in there. It's preferable for these bodies to be properly dealt with, there just aren't always better alternatives if you live in a state where abortion isn't legal, there have been cases in recent memory of women in other states being prosecuted for natural miscarriages.

  14. We have a legal system where the defendant is presumed to be innocent until proven guilty. It's why some defendants are allowed to be free while awaiting trial. A victim impact statement is something that the judge can consider along with the rest of the evidence when deciding whether to keep the defendant locked up or under what conditions they may be released.

  16.  @dannyingram1196  It's not slander when it's true. There really has been an investigation and there really is a report that definitely would have been released had he not resigned. It's less certain what that report says, but it's unlikely to be complimentary if he resigned rather than let it be released ahead of his confirmation hearings.

Because at least the mother of this infant did her best to give the infant a chance to be handled with some degree of dignity rather than be dumped into a dumpster and possibly wind up at the dump and completely forgotten about by everybody else.

  20. That's certainly possible, but it's also possible that there was nothing that could be done. I stopped breathing as an infant and the only reason I survived was that I stopped breathing following a seizure when my parents were in the room with me. Had they not been there, I could have died of something that medical care wouldn't have been possible to obtain. I'm still not entirely sure that I made it through quite OK, I get the feeling sometimes that I got some brain damage as a result, but I'm mostly living a decent life, so it's not something I spend too much time thinking about.

  26. As a non-professional, my immediate assumption, blood is in perpetual short supply still. Perhaps in the future with medical advances we may have synthetic blood that's close enough that this would be a reasonable thing to do. But, it would probably make far more sense to develop drone technology to drop the appropriate blood off either at the accident scene or to the ambulance as it's en route to the hospital.

  27. They have, it just depends where you're living. Around here the medics have blood to transfuse and have had for years. I'd expect it to spread, but the amount of blood needed does require a temporary diversion of blood to the program, after that, it should be a relatively minor amount to replace any that is spoiled in some way. But, most of the blood being transfused is going to be the blood that would have been transfused in the ER anyways. So, it's mostly a wash in that regards.

  28.  @Killer_Turnip  King County, WA, USA has been giving blood to the medic one units for about 6 years at this point. Which obviously includes a period of extreme low supply due to the pandemic and they're still at it. A lot of it has to do with the fact that they serve not just Seattle, but also the rest of the county where it can take a while to get to the patient and then for the patient to get back to a hospital.

  29. I genuinely wonder if the fact that he did enter a guilty verdict at the trial has any impact on the ability of the prosecution to get the sentence fixed on appeal. I don't know that it's allowed to rule guilty and then decide during sentencing that he's in fact not guilty. If he genuinely thought he needed more time, he could have delayed the ruling. Sentencing and the actual guilt are separate phases for a reason.

  30. Unfortunately, he is unlikely to make $5m in total over the course of his entire life, even excluding whatever jail sentence he gets. And obviously, even the price of restoration, assuming it's possible, is likely more than he'll be able to afford as well. Yes, it is fortunate that nobody was hurt or killed, but these items are only marginally less precious than a human life and just as irreplaceable.

  31.  @micclay  We all know what the answer to that is. If there were any legitimate reason for it, the defendant would have been found not guilty at trial, not during the sentencing phase. He was a judge, he can't possibly have never overseen a trial where the accuser is clearly full of it. It happens and the whole way this was handled smacked of him not liking the outcome.

  37.  @Catherinzsl  I'm not surprised, in most cases, as long as the box is appropriately set up, a baby should be able to handle being in there for a rather long time without any harm. Granted, that's probably still measured in minutes, but most communities can get somebody to one of these boxes within a half hour if a mother is capable of getting to the box in the first place.

It pushes us closer to a civil war or somebody deciding that it's open season on SCOTUS justices that have completely lost any sense of responsibility or ethics. There's a fair number of folks out there that take the aphorism of "we've been given 4 boxes to use to protect the country, soap box, ballot box, jury box and ammo box, use in that order" literally. We've already had a CEO of a major health insurance company assassinated, do you really think that more bad rulings aren't going to inspire a similar level of patriotism? Barring something else putting things back on the rails, it's pretty much inevitable that somebody will.

With no punishment, there's at least some hope that it won't be overturned.

  43. Yep, a detail that a lot of people seem to be missing is that the reason for the no judgment sentencing is because that's the only hope there is for preserving the conviction. Any sort of punishment here is likely to get tossed by SCOTUS as they've ruled that the POTUS can do pretty much whatever he likes because apparently, the President is now a king, even though that's not at all what the constitution says. It's been a trend for a bit now where they go for the technicality over the spirit. So, unless you give somebody cash for an explicit promise for a politician to do something specific, it's not a bribe. Or, you can do that, but give the cash afterwards and it's a gratuity, which is somehow not a bribe. And you can pay off a politicians credit card debt, which is apparently also not a bribe.

The SCOTUS has made it pretty clear that they're going to let him off the hook for pretty much anything he does on account of a couple of the justices being appointed by him and a good chunk of the rest being horribly corrupt.

  46. That will be made public eventually. I'm curious as to how this is involuntary manslaughter rather than an accident. This is why the public is generally allowed to observe court proceedings. EDIT: from what I can tell, it will depend on whether or not the professor was criminally negligent when causing the death. (Or if he caused the death at all would likely be another issue)

  47. How so? The case was tried before he won re-election. Had he lost, there's a decent chance he would have received actual punishment. But, given the way that SCOTUS has been ruling with respect to what the POTUS is allowed to do, there's a lower chance of this being tossed on appeal due to a lack of actual punishment associated with it. He's been convicted and "sentenced." Even if they do overturn it, it doesn't change the fact that he was convicted. Only the MAGA folks seem to be unaware of how big of a deal this is. But, somehow the stuff Hunter Biden did is a big deal.

He's been let off the hook for leading an insurrection, and this is a blot on his reputation? As far as Kangaroo court goes, this sort of fraud is a very big deal, far more so than what Hunter Biden was convicted of. But, somehow you people think that was legitimate, but this wasn't. Go figure, I guess you're only law and order folks when it's the other side being convicted.

  49. Because that's how the media portrays it. From what I understand, the people on both sides want a negotiated peace deal of some sort. It's the people in charge of the military that don't. At the government level, it's literally terrorists against war criminals.

  50. It's unlikely to cause problems with the shortage. The issue likely would be simply building up the supply to do it. Once the vehicles are stocked, the blood would be rotated in and out of the vehicles, and the blood that is actually administered should be mostly the blood that would have been administered in the hospital anyways. The other issues with logistics are more likely to be a problem.
