TBH, it is a valid thing to bring up because this is not what the box is for. If an infant does die of natural causes despite whatever best efforts, there's a process for dealing with that.

Apparently, the infant died of natural causes, the police know the identify of the mother and nothing is going to happen after this. Which, is really how it should be, apart from the fact that mothers that just lost a child that early shouldn't be in fear of prosecution if they didn't commit any crimes.

One would think that if you don't support abortion that you'd at least support real birth control and family planning education. Sadly, the folks opposed to abortion are often also opposed to the various methods of making the need less common.

@jenshaw8085 The thing is that even if you are careful and do everything right, rapists are still a thing. Abstinence is 100% effective, but only if you actually abstain. If teens could abstain until they were ready to have kids, there wouldn't be much of a debate about all of this and with teen pregnancy rates being what they are, it's pretty clear that some portion can't wait.

Quite possibly, although the abortion laws being what they are in many states, it simply being natural causes isn't automatically enough to not have legal problems that come as a consequence of a dead infant. Especially, if we're talking about a baby that died shortly after being born.

@Orchidaceous1 And it may be as simple as the infant dying of something along the lines of seizure related complications at night when she was sleeping. That nearly happened to me, if the seizure hadn't happened when my parents were in the room and the county didn't have ER doctors that travel around the county to stabilize people in situations like that, I'd probably be dead. But, unlike this case, the state wasn't arresting women for infants that died of natural causes or for miscarriages.

I've seen some folks posting that the infant died of natural causes and they know who the mother is.

As long as the box is set up to clean, the only real issue with a dead baby being dropped off is potential trauma to the people that open the box to get whatever is in there. It's preferable for these bodies to be properly dealt with, there just aren't always better alternatives if you live in a state where abortion isn't legal, there have been cases in recent memory of women in other states being prosecuted for natural miscarriages.

OK, so which dumpster should they use for the babies then? Because at least the mother of this infant did her best to give the infant a chance to be handled with some degree of dignity rather than be dumped into a dumpster and possibly wind up at the dump and completely forgotten about by everybody else.

That's certainly possible, but it's also possible that there was nothing that could be done. I stopped breathing as an infant and the only reason I survived was that I stopped breathing following a seizure when my parents were in the room with me. Had they not been there, I could have died of something that medical care wouldn't have been possible to obtain. I'm still not entirely sure that I made it through quite OK, I get the feeling sometimes that I got some brain damage as a result, but I'm mostly living a decent life, so it's not something I spend too much time thinking about.

@Catherinzsl I'm not surprised, in most cases, as long as the box is appropriately set up, a baby should be able to handle being in there for a rather long time without any harm. Granted, that's probably still measured in minutes, but most communities can get somebody to one of these boxes within a half hour if a mother is capable of getting to the box in the first place.

@SelenaKnight-n7h Not specifically, but there are alarms and this one appears to be at a clinic that would have somebody around all the time for other patients with urgent needs.

@FaybayandRemi Yep, they're set up to remove as much of the risk of the parents being accidentally identified as possible, to remove as much of the risk of desperate mothers killing the baby to avoid the consequences of the situation becoming known. Sad, but it definitely does happen from time to time. Pregnancies aren't always obvious until later, and sometimes it can be concealed.

Yes, although in all fairness, most of Idaho isn't that far from WA where abortions are legal. A major problem in states where it is legal is people crossing the boarder to get an abortion. And those that are stuck have to go back to the old school, and super dangerous, coat hangers.
